God promises to punish all liars in Hell forever. When people are liars, they cannot trust anyone else. Often times, fear is tied to guilt. When our consciences are not clear we feel guilty. Jesus can and will clear our consciences. Joseph asks his brothers the key question that would stop him from trying to get revenge; "Am I in the place of God"? Satan will try to use fear to keep us from blessings that God has promised. Christian burial is not a carryover from paganism, it is a reminder that wherever we are buried is not our final home.
God the Holy Spirit gave Jacob the words he was to say over his sons. God knows exactly what is going to happen all the time. It was God's will and plan that Jesus should die on the cross for our sins. He plans each day exactly the way it is supposed to be. We don't need to fear people, we need to fear God. Jesus is the only One who lived as fully man who never sinned. All that matters is that we live for Jesus.
Abraham believed God, Isaac was submitted to his father, and Jacob was a deciver. Yet God identifies HImself as the God of Abraham, Isaac, and Jacob. All people everywhere have sinned and yet God choses to save. In moments of adversity people are willing to become slaves to get things from the government. God works for His people's good and His glory, in prosperity or suffering. God cares about His creation and no person has a right to discriminate against another person due to thier genetic makeup. However, not everyone is created excatly alike. Repentant faith is a gift from God.
In this passage, Jacob is an old man and he made a difficult journey because of the famine. God knew the famine would be severe and He was not surprised. God knows everything. Not everything that happens to us is good, but everything is used for good for those who love God and are called according to His purpose. Jacob had to go to Egypt because he was out of food. It is not wrong to cry/weep. It is not okay to cry because of whining, tantrums, etc. Every year we live seems shorter and we need to make the most of our days. Just because life can be difficult, we are not to give up.
Joseph is a type of Jesus. Just as Joseph was despised and rejected by his brothers, Jesus was despised and rejected by His brothers. God designed, from the beginning how to recognize how His redemptive plan saves people. Everything has a purpose, even fleas. God is at work in every situation for the good of His people. We must respond to the invitation to accept Christ's salvation. Forgiveness does not wait until the other person says they are sorry. We are not saved by what we do, we are saved by what He did.
Israel's offspring did not know how long the famine would last, yet he did not want to let Benjamin go to Egypt. When we have guilty consciences, all kinds of fear can take root in our lives. Fear is often rooted in guilt. We are told, by God, to not be afraid. When God works through people, it is still supernatural. We need to thank God for whatever we have. All that we own and are comes from Him. In Christ, there is no racism, in Him, we need to love one another. God knows everything and God is in control.
It took two years before Joseph was out of the prison that he wanted to be free from. Most of the time people do not think of the things of the world in light of scripture. Everyone knows that we have done wrong. If we know and love God, we know that when difficulty comes, we can trust that He has a plan and He is in control. Joseph made it very clear that what he knew was not from him. Sometimes God speaks to us and we just do not get it. Joseph's 20% tax would end up putting the Israelites. There will always be "A Pharoh that will not remember Joseph." God may not give us what we want, be He will always give us what we need.
If we are in Christ, we do not have to be afraid, even in a dungeon. Joseph's master Potiphar could have had Joseph killed, but instead, he had Joseph thrown in a dungeon. There are times when we will pray and God will not answer the way we would like. We might be tempted to think that God is against us, but that is not how we should think. Some people only study the Scriptures so that they can try and manipulate God to get what they want. Instead, we need to pray to God, let Your Kingdom come and Your will be done. There is never a panic in Heaven. If we love God, all will go well. If we know God, whatever is happening is within His sovereign control. God has all power.
