Jacob's behavior pattern of deception is not something that we should mimic. God still used Jacob and gave Jacob a profound dream. We need to trust the Lord with everything we have. When God chooses to, He reveals things to His children in dreams. Even after God appears to Jacob in a dream, Jacob did not humble himself, but instead was obnoxious to God. If we go to Heaven, it is not because we chose well, it is entirely because God has had mercy on us. We owe everything to God. If we are followers of Jesus Christ, we will walk where He walks and do what He desires. We need to be careful what we plant, what we sow is what we will also reap.
We see that Isaac's family has a generational problem of deceit. Isaac thought he was going to die because he lost his eyesight. We should take good care of our bodies by eating right and exercising. Isaac would spend decades waiting to die. Whatever time we have, we need to use it for the glory of God. We may die sooner than we anticipate or we may die later than we anticipate. Only God knows how many days are left. Even if our parents try to get us to do something wrong, we are not to do it. No one has the authority to get us to do God forbids or forbid us from doing something God commands. We are not to trust people who are not trustworthy. Some people will bring the Lord into their lies in order to deceive. Our words matter and even if our earthly fathers did not bless us, we can receive blessings from our Heavenly Father for eternity. God did not choose Jacob because he was a better man, God chose Jacob because He wanted to choose Jacob.
Instead of trusting in the Lord, Jacob feared men. The fear of others will lead us to do things that we should not do. Instead of fearing people, we should fear (reverential fear) the Lord. There is tremendous peace and comfort knowing that God is in charge. God is in control, no matter what anyone does or says. God is always at work, in every situation, for the good of His children. God says He will be with us and bless us if we are in Christ. There is no amount of money that will pay to have someone take our place on the death bed. If we trust in Jesus Christ as Lord and Savior, we will receive eternal life. God blesses us not just for us, but for others. God blesses sinful people; that does not make sin okay. If we are very successful, some people will hate us. If our goal is to get rich we are wasting our time. We are not to envy the rich or anyone else. God is faithful and He will meet every need if we trust and obey Him.
In the midst of our lives, we may be tempted to think that this is all there is. However, we will all live somewhere forever. All the things we read about in the lives of the people in the passage are in the past and everything we do here will be in the past as well one day. Everything in scripture points out that Jesus is the promised One whom God chose to save us from our sins. There is no substitute for the blessings of God. We need to seek the Lord to do His will instead of doing our will and asking God to bless it. God declares what will be as if it already is. God chooses people not based on ability but based on His sovereign grace. God deliberately chooses who we would not so that His grace shines forth. We should not be like Esau and give up our birth rights for pleasures of the moment. God saves sinners.
Isaac was 40 years old at this point in the passage. Abraham wanted Isaac to marry someone who had a fear of the Lord. Abraham believed so much that he would not allow his servant to take Isaac to Abraham's prior home. We need to seek God's will even more than our own feelings. God had already planned for Isaac and Rebekah before Abraham and Sarah were married. God cares whether or not we look like Him and God knows how to work hard. We need to obey the Lord and do His will. It is important to go back and repeat the stories when God has done amazing things. Jesus keeps people together when they love Him more than they love one another.
It's good to have boundaries. Abraham knowing this made a public transaction to purchase burial land from the Hethites. This would matter not only for his time but also for future generations. We need to be prepared for our final resting place. Our bodies that wear out will come back as a resurrected body if we are in Christ. God will bring us back as something beautiful in the resurrection. Abraham knew that physical death is not the end.
God told Abraham to take his son Isaac to a particular place. This was not just any mountain but one of great significance. It is not our job to make things happen. Our job is not to step in and make things happen. The will of God for our lives is to believe and obey Jesus. It is very important to know and listen to God's voice. If we are in Christ we are His dearly loved children. God's intention for us today is a deeper walk with God than even Abraham had. God's plan will include things we did not choose and exclude things that we would have chosen. His ways are greater than our ways. We need to obey.
Abraham had great regard for Ishmael and Isaac. God is the One who makes nations. We accomplish anything of significance, we must give God the praise. All that we have and all that we can do belongs to God. We must always wait on the Lord. God hears us even when our cries are muffled. God does see and care for us. We are not to be afraid for God hears us. God knows what He is doing and He opens our eyes we need it. The blessings on Abraham were so clear that it made other people nervous. Sometimes God's blessings on us are so evident that it makes other people nervous. Abraham desired to have separate places set apart for worshiping God.
Even when we walk with God a long time, fear is still an adversary, and old habits are hard to break. Abraham was protected by God despite that Abraham was still lying about Sarah. God's choosing is not based on us, it is based on His mercy and grace that He protects us. We do not earn God's favor or obtain our salvation by works. God is so gracious and merciful that God forgives us and takes us to Heaven, but He continues to use imperfect people for His glory. When God tells us something, we need to obey immediately. God deals with all kinds of people, when Abraham said there was no fear of God in the place, Abraham was wrong. God has written magnificent history and it is being played out all over the world. God has revealed Himself through His word and we would do well to believe HIm. If we use half-truths to deceive, we are lying and we do not want to be on Satan's team. God knows what He is doing and He has chosen to do what is best.
