Often, those who give with an open heart are rewarded in return more abundantly than what they are able to give. That is the story of many volunteers, including Beth Luck.

Mrs. Beth first heard of Wears Valley Ranch through friends when she moved to the community about 3 years ago. She currently volunteers as a Spanish teacher to high school students. Prior to moving to the area, Mrs. Beth – who is also a RN – accepted a job as a school nurse. The school had a need for a Spanish teacher, so she went for her Master’s in Education so that she could fill both roles. She had previously been in language school in Costa Rica and lived in Guatemala as a missionary.

“I greatly enjoy my time with both students and staff.  Everyone is amazing, and it humbles me to see the work that God is doing in all of our lives.  I am encouraged and learn more about walking with the Lord every time I go to the Ranch,” says Mrs. Beth about serving at the Ranch.

Like any good teacher that cares about her students, Mrs. Beth works hard to find a way to teach that is both relevant and enjoyable. “I want to be creative, but also meet academic requirements. My favorite thing is to try and “trick” them into learning things while they think we are just talking or spending time together,” explains Mrs. Beth. “High school is work, but I don’t want them to always feel like they are working.”

Because Spanish class is all about communication, the course allows the teacher to build relationships with her students. Mrs. Beth views her students as inspirations and looks forward to meeting with them. Incorporating Scripture into teaching is a favorite aspect to teaching at the Ranch.  “Our faith is our life, and it is awesome to be able to strengthen faith through Scripture at the same time as we meet educational goals.  I believe life is all about Jesus (and not about us) and allowing Scripture in school helps us to maintain a godly focus,” explains Mrs. Beth.

After teaching at Wears Valley Ranch for two years, Mrs. Beth highly recommends the Ranch to any parent or student. “It’s a great place to learn and grow in a loving, respectful environment. Students are free to explore many areas of interest and I have been very impressed by all the other teachers and the quality of their education. Faith is not just allowed; it is nurtured. The Ranch is a healing place.”
