Staff and Students make a joyful noise during Minicourses.

The weeks that separate Thanksgiving and Christmas breaks can be a time of restlessness and anxiety for our students. With this in mind, St. Andrew’s School takes on a new schedule for this period. Morning classes typically consist of English and Math. However, the afternoons are open for elective courses we refer to as Minicourses.

Hire Me: For most people, their first job interview caused anxiety and dread. For students of St. Andrew’s School their first interview got a whole lot easier. Students signed up to participate in a “Hire Me” elective course. The course covered best practices in preparing a resume’, as well as how to prepare for an interview. The finale of the course was a visit to the Sevier County Utility District. Human Resource Director, Valarie Bolduc provided each student with an interview based on a specific job description. “At first, I was nervous, but when I talked to Miss Bolduc, she made it fun and enjoyable,” says Hannah Houser, St. Andrew’s School student. “I’m thankful for this school and these unique learning opportunities.”

Wood Turning: Students are enjoying the craft of woodturning at the Ranch. Bob Law of the Smoky Mountain Woodturners Association led a course where students were able to make pens and ornaments. Woodturning is an on-going opportunity for our students, and we are grateful for Mr. Law and his associates who volunteer their time and talents to our students.

A capella: The Ranch is blessed with many talented staff members. Miss Heather is a gifted vocalist and musician who led a course in A capella. The Ranch family was treated to a performance following a special Christmas lunch. Staff also participated and learned to harmonize as they “made a joyful noise to the Lord.”

Drama: The drama course consisted of students of all ages who came together to tell the Christmas story – the birth of our King.

Historical Hike: Several students participated in a historical hike through Elkmont in the Great Smoky Mountains National Park. Students learned how early settlers of the area survived in the harsh environment. They also explored how the logging industry, tourism, and summer homes impacted the area prior to the founding of the National Park.

Other courses offered an array of topics and activities – brain games, bowling, scrapbooking, and even a trip to Sevier Air! We are thankful to all staff and volunteers who make this season a time for learning and fun.
